Wastewater Treatment Operator Primary Duties The Wastewater Treatment Operator operates and monitors all City owned Wastewater Treatment Facilities and pumping stations. They will maintain wastewater facilities in compliance with applicable regulations. Key Responsibilities: Monitor treatment plan and facility processes and record activities consistent with regulatory requirements. Complete Chain of Custody documentation and delivery of samples to lab for analysis. Identify non-compliances and report any spills or overflow events. Respond to alarms, troubleshoot and rectify issues as they arise. Evaluate trends and identify visual and audible abnormalities to determine process performance. Take appropriate corrective action to address incidents of non-compliance and deviations from design objectives. Identify and propose improvements to operational plans, procedures, workflow processes and infrastructure. Review internal and external facility testing results and determine treatment efficiency, identify potential process issues and administer the appropriate operational changes. Conduct routine maintenance checks on facility equipment and notify appropriate stakeholders of issues or required repairs. Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.

Job Duties/Responsibilities: • Ensure safety of all staff, customers and contractors working on the distribution and collection system • Ensure all staff have the necessary training, skills, tools and PPE to perform their tasks safely and efficiently • Create a safety culture where staff are encouraged to identify hazards, complete safety inspections and safety audits to ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken • Support with recruitment, development, performance management, prioritizing work, disciplining and recognizing of all DC staff as required • Promotion of Aquatera's Principles and Values and Code of Conduct • Support the staff through, coaching, mentoring, and training towards job tasks and certification for all operations staff • Support with CUPE Collective agreement administration • Schedule shift, vacation, and overtime, including timesheet review • Communicate effectively, maintaining positive working relationships with all Aquatera departments and the public • Support leadership with annual D/C budget preparation, capital maintenance budget, monitor costs and maintain control of expenditures, reporting exceptions • Assume the duties of the D/C Manager when manager is absent • Support the day to day operations of Distribution & Collection • Support the water sampling daily, weekly, and quarterly as required by Alberta Environment and submit records • Provide technical input on Capital upgrade projects to our infrastructure • Support with the review and approve all projects associated with the Distribution and Collection infrastructure as delegated by the DC Manager • Ensure that projects are completed to the level expected • Be available to assist operators in the field during and after hours as required • Perform other duties as assigned • Approve purchases in Aquatera’s name up to $50,000 Qualifications/Requirements: • Customer service oriented with exceptional skills in dealing with the public • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the ability to use tact, diplomacy, and mature judgment • Communicates clearly and effectively in person and in writing • Demonstrates extensive knowledge in the practices and procedures relating to Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection system maintenance • Understands asset management theory and practices • Must possess Level IV Water Distribution and Level IV Wastewater Collection certification • Minimum 5 years operating experience in a related field • Has successfully demonstrated the ability to be an effective front-line manager including required safety courses • Able to effectively prioritize and maintain work assignments for self and staff; provide effective supervision, delegate authority and responsibility; schedule and create work programs on short- and long-term basis • Ability to use ever evolving technology including computer and computer programs effectively • Ability to assist with budgeting, cost control, record keeping and reporting requirements • Ability to interpret plans, blueprints and maps The following will be required as conditions of employment: • Valid Canadian driver’s license minimum Class V • Drivers abstract satisfactory to the employer • Criminal Records check satisfactory to the employer • Employment is conditional upon the ability to pass a 50 lb. fitness test • Satisfactory completion of a drug and alcohol test   We offer competitive compensation and benefits. DUTIES: Reporting to the Commissioner, Infrastructure Services, this position will have overall responsibility of the Pollution Control Department, which includes the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment systems, including the Lou Romano Water Reclamation Plant, Little River Pollution Control Plant and the Windsor Biosolids Processing Facility.  This portfolio also oversees the City’s sewage and stormwater pumping stations, storm water retention ponds/basins and an industrial waste control monitoring and enforcement program.  Must also meet all provincial legislative and regulatory compliance in regard to the effective operations of the wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, monitoring of closed landfill sites and industrial pre-treatment programs. Accountable for the preventative maintenance of all facilities in order to assure long-term operation, with stringent cost control.  Experience in class environmental assessment study, design, construction and commissioning of wastewater treatment and pumping station systems. Will be responsible for the preparation and administration of the annual and multi-year departmental capital and operating budgets.  Will engage in labour relations, including negotiations as required by the collective bargaining agreements.  Must maintain effective relationships internally and with representatives of other agencies and industrial managers in the community.  Must research and prepare reports for the department and the City in all facets of the environment, liquid, solid and air.  Drafts design standards and reviews internal technical work and that of consulting engineers.  Ensure compliance with provincial safety legislation and corporate safety policies and procedures.  Review employee training, attendance and effectiveness, in order to achieve a knowledgeable, safe, efficient and motivated staff. Will be required to travel to off site locations. Will perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.  Will perform other related duties as required.
