Hosted by the OWWA Treatment Committee

The Britannia Water Treatment Plant was built in 1955 to supplement the drinking water supply for Ottawa’s growing population. It was then expanded in 1988 again to account for population growth in the west-end of the city.  Since then, it has also been upgraded with more advanced sedimentation and filtration features. The two water treatment plants in Ottawa (Britannia and Lemieux Island) supply drinking water to a population of approximately 980 000 residents.  Both plants are conventional biofiltration water treatment facilities with 18 dual-media rapid gravity filters at each facility for a total rated capacity of 760 ML/d.

We invite you to a guided tour of the Britannia Water Treatment Plant with members of the City of Ottawa’s technical staff. The tour will explain the City’s multi-barrier approach to drinking water treatment and will focus on the coagulation, sedimentation and filtration processes, with opportunities to also observe the treatment chemical storage and standby power facilities.

The tour will be approximately 1.5 hours in duration, and will require attendees to wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking.  Hardhats will be provided on-site.
