Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Manager of Public Works, the Water and Wastewater Supervisor, serving as the Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) is accountable for ensuring the Town’s drinking water and wastewater systems are safe, compliant, and operated in accordance with all applicable legislation. The Supervisor also plays a key role in the continuous improvement, implementation, and administration of the Town’s Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS).

Responsibilities 

·        Managing and maintaining water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems and sanitary pumping stations. This includes associated equipment maintenance and inspections, performing work site inspections, making recommendations and responding to enquiries regarding infrastructure conditions and maintenance.

·        Providing day to day supervision to the Water/Wastewater Operators and other staff by assigning, distributing, scheduling and overseeing the daily work activities, resolving staff concerns, hiring, performance management and coaching/mentoring.

·        Reviewing and making comments on planning applications related to the installation of infrastructure in accordance with Town bylaws, standards and engineering practices.

·        Responding to emergencies and providing guidance and oversight after hours for watermain breaks, sewer back ups and other urgent matters.  

Qualifications

·        Three (3) year college diploma in water, water collection and water distribution systems or related discipline or university education in Civil Engineering or related discipline (considered an asset)

·        Class 2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate, Class 2 Wastewater Collection Operator license

·        Minimum of five (5) years of relevant Supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment including ORO responsibilities.

·        Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations or requirements such as the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act and Ontario Water Resources Act.

·        In depth knowledge and demonstrated technical experience in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, including large municipal residential drinking water systems and sanitary pumping stations.

·        Ability to lead staff, proven project management, budgeting, procurement, emergency management, decision making, and ability to act strategically in a political and community service environment.

·        Intermediate computer literacy using MS Office and work order management systems.

·        Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

·        DZ License (considered an asset)
